This paper compares and contrasts the strengths and weaknesses of two health care organizations: Alzheimer’s Association (a nonprofit organization) and USC University Hospital, a for-profit health care organization. Alzheimer’s Association is a nonprofit global health care organization that specializes in the provision of care and support to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. The organization is also the largest nonprofit funder of research in Alzheimer’s disease. The association provides care and support to people with Alzheimer’s as well as related dementias at local, national, and global levels. Individuals are able to reach out to the organization by calling staff members through a helpline that also facilitates translation services to facilitate communication in 170 languages ((Deber, 2010). Each year, more than 250,000 callers are offered health assistance and information by the Alzheimer’s Association (Deber, 2010).

Some 4,500 provider groups are involved in the work of the Alzheimer’s Association (Deber, 2010). These groups are spread across the United States and connect with people globally through the organization’s online messaging boards. These provider groups play a critical role in providing families and caregivers with comprehensive online information and resources, with emphasis on early-, middle-, and late-stage care (Deber, 2010).

The main strength of the Alzheimer’s Association is that this organization occupies a position of leadership in Alzheimer’s health care provision and research. Additionally, the organization has over the past 30 years been playing a crucial role in every major milestone achieve in Alzheimer’s research advancement. As the largest nonprofit provider of funds for Alzheimer’s research, the Alzheimer’s Association has become renowned for its commitment to progress in preventions, new treatments, and cure.

The organization’s main weakness is lack of sufficient funding in order to carry out its work of providing health care as well as conducting Alzheimer’s research. It is normally difficult to get enough funders to provide funds for the activities of the organization, which range from care-giving and research to advocacy and policymaking. USC University Hospital

The main strength for the USC University Hospital is that funding is not a fundamental problem (Kinney, 2009). This is in contrast with the Alzheimer’s Association, for whom funding a major problem. For this reason, patients are assured of continuity, reliability, and high quality services. On the other hand, support groups are assured of regular budgetary allocations in their activities. This funding strength also facilitates enhancement of administrative procedures as well as the quality of engagement with third party payers.

Nevertheless, the USC University Hospital also faces a major weakness of lack of a strong network of international customer base and online community. Most of the customers come from within the United States. This weakness renders the organization deficient as far as global administrative practices are concerned. An international presence would have exposed the organization’s staff to the dynamics of international administrative practices, particularly with regard to the management of online information centers such as those operated by the Alzheimer’s Association (Rosenau, 2010). For patients outside the US seeking health care help from the organization, this is a major weakness.


One of the best ways for Alzheimer’s Association to overcome the funding problem is to generate income by charging fees to the online community benefiting through the organization’s online information centers. The second funding option would entail charging premium-rate charges for the information and care-giving services offered both locally and internationally. As for the USC University Hospital, first of all, it is imperative for a strong network of international customer base and online community to be nurtured. Secondly, the organization should embrace international administrative practices in order to attract a global client base. In light of this comparison between Alzheimer’s Association and USC University Hospital, I would prefer to be part of Alzheimer’s Association. At Alzheimer’s Association, I would be sure to interact with patients, administrators, third-party payers, both locally and internationally.
