Hi Writer, not to waste your time but I hope this material helps you. I have spent 19 years in the military and learned war/conflict is a horrible but sometimes necessary action that should not be confused with dishonorable campaigns overseas to fatten bank accounts. Republican is my normal vote but I don’t agree with all of it obviously, I hope to make a difference in the office one day. In my mind, there are many similar relationships/pairs I have identified. Conservatism/Liberalism, The Sword/The Pen, Republican/Democrat, President/1ST Lady, my unit Company Commander/1st Sergeant, a Platoon Leader(officer)/a Platoon Sergeant(enlisted), love/hate, man/woman, father/son. The second half of some of these pairs would not exist or be unable to function without the core element or essence of the first half. Some would. I spent the first five years and 2 months of my military career as a grunt in the U.S. Marines, but then 03’ and 12’ were bad years too. I know what it takes to defend Democracy and Liberalism from the horrible warmongers in the world. Scour Presidential candidates with volleys of patriotic wisdom from the forefathers on platforms erected in both Conservatism and Liberalism.

I was hoping to show a synchronous marriage of Conservatism and Liberalism possible through their differences. I was hoping to have the time to write this paper from the heart, but I don’t.

As humans, we are entitled to hold and share our own beliefs and dogmas on various subjects such as culture, religion, and others that are pertinent to society.  In line with this assertion, liberalism and conservatism ideologies all have vital roles to play in state affairs (Lakoff, 2002). In a nutshell, liberals advocate for constant changes in how affairs are conducted and hence, they challenge the status quo. Conservatives, on the other hand, are considered to be more rigid and as such, they advocate for traditional values and principles to govern society as a whole. This essay will strive to bring out the similarities and differences between the two philosophies as well as attempt to show that indeed both ideologies are important to society; none is better than the other. Additionally, it will show how these principles interplay to affect the educational programs and the US presidential race as core emergent issues

To begin with, conservatives perceive liberals’ attitudes towards social reforms such as resolving situations through social and educational restructuring as overly naïve. According to the former, these practices only instigate the robust growth of social crimes and vices. Conversely, liberals believe that the environment and education are imperative to shaping how individuals in society think. Furthermore, liberals are generally optimistic about human nature and only strive to see the best in people. Any wrong committed by a person, according to them, is blamed entirely on the environment and education. These factors are what constitute a profound basis for devising reforms to remedy wrong behavior in people instead of focusing on the actual person.

Secondly, liberals do not concur with the belief that human beings are innately feeble and malevolent. They instead choose to adopt the principle of trust that allows them to thrust away any pessimistic view regarding human nature (Gutek, 2004). Contrary to this, conservatives believe that evil is prevalent in society and people have the ultimate power of choice to do good or evil. Those who choose the latter should be punished by the law accordingly.

Thirdly, liberals advocate for a more open and free society in general. A good example of this concept is the view that schools should be treated as places of academic freedom. This freedom should apply to all academic factions especially among the students and teachers and it should not be restricted by constraints of political or religious influence. If anything, the curriculum adopted should equally be open to accommodate and take into account renewed ideas and concepts, new methods of inquiry in which students are free to ask questions and consequently challenge the status quo (Mill, 1991). Controversial subjects should also be integrated into the curriculum to stimulate critical thinking. However, conservatives oppose this dogma and claim that this open society is a misleading stunt that is typical to a predisposed society whereby truths, values, and social norms largely depend on how a particular group defines and perceives a situation. In light of this, they assert that group-oriented perception greatly impedes the application of universally accepted standards of behavior, social norms, and ethics. Basically, everything is masked by a wave of relativism whereby truths and moral values are relative to the groups advocating for them.

Moreover, liberals place emphasis on the process-adoption of appropriate methods and coherent frameworks to propagate the smooth and uninterrupted flow of things in societal and educational matters. They argue that a system that is primarily dependent on the process stands a better chance for thriving since any conflicting issues are addressed as they arise. Contrary to this, conservatives hold the notion that this approach however favorable is quite disproportionate. They argue that liberals are overly indulged in the process that they forget to acknowledge the interplay of content and principles. The use of this process does not provide amicable grounds and bounds of judgment to decide on whether something is right or wrong.

All in all, these two groups, however, different seem to have one thing in common. Both factions acknowledge the role played by the law. Additionally, they prioritize abiding by the rule of law and its corresponding regulations to constitute a just and lucid justice structure. They all concur with the indisputable fact that the law should govern the state and consequently act as the citizens’ watchdog in monitoring all activities conducted by the government.

It is quite clear that both ideologies have an implication on the education program in the US. Liberals have advocated for schools that are multi-purpose as opposed to the view that they should have one sole purpose as suggested by conservatives. According to the educational reforms recommended by liberals, schools should be fluid when it comes to addressing issues of societal changes. They should act as multi-dimensional agents that not only perform academic functions but should also inculcate other functions such as counseling and recreation among other social needs. They advocate for a curriculum and a set of well-designed policies and instructions that are highly customized to accommodate the increasing changes in social necessities. The curriculum cannot be rigid but should instead be susceptible to viable revisions and remodeling depending on present and anticipated future problems.

Evidence of the above is visible in quite a number of areas. For instance, contentious topics such as AIDS, drug and substance abuse and several others have been introduced in the curriculum of several schools across some of the American states. This is primarily because the government, through the influence of the liberal, has deemed it appropriate to integrate these emergent issues to impart sufficient knowledge to students on how to tackle them (Berger, 2016). In addition to this, teachers have been prompted to be ready and willing to engage students in meaningful discussions in light of such sensitive topics in order to foster a culture of self-awareness and consciousness among students. This approach has empowered individuals by equipping them with knowledge and essential skills in addition to instilling a deep sense of values and ethics. Engel (2013) argues that this type of education is appropriate in the sense that it prepares students for universal freedom and tolerance in addressing various issues prevalent in today’s society.

Conservatives, on the other hand, have the bold perception that schools should use education as a primary tool for enforcing assimilation. According to them, schools should strictly impact cultural values based on American history and literature as opposed to teaching multi-culturalism. In addition to these, conservatives believe that schools should be accorded educational freedom of choice (Nussbaum, 2009).  This is evidenced by their proposed reforms of government-sponsored vouchers, a move that was adopted and integrated during the Reagan administration in the late 1980s. These vouchers allowed and have still continued to enable parents to enroll their children in private schools of their choice as well as offer students that hail from low-income families a chance to study. Conservatives projected that this system would ensure that competition would remain predominant in all educational institutions, enabling the government to distinguish efficient schools from incompetent ones. A recent investigation of the effects of this reform reveals that the competition has improved the quality of schools, both public and private ones.  (Figilo and Hart, 2014).

In addition to the above issue, conservatives and liberals have also affected the current ongoing US presidential race. This issue of conservative and libertarian candidates is quite contentious with respect to this year’s presidential race. For quite some time now, US politics have been paved with conservative traditions which are believed to be challenging. The proponents of these traditions are aggressive and insightful but their approach as conservatives is marred by flaws and problems. The Republicans who are the greatest conservatives advocate for principal ideas and principles that have become increasingly unpopular among the populace. Principles of self-reliance and self-sustenance as well as a restrained government have lost meaning to the American people and are now perceived as wayward and uncivilized. Donald Trump who hails from this side has decided to change tactics as a result of the above revelations. He has decided to adopt a slogan, “Make America Great Again” that has a more liberal rather than conservative approach to some extent.  He has prioritized immigration reforms, claiming that he will lock out all Mexicans and Muslim counterparts. He claims that such illegal immigrants are the source of all American problems ranging from rape to drug trafficking and have consequently crippled the American economy to some extent (Trump, 2015). His support of such views has earned him the support of other conservatives including congressmen.

On the other hand, the liberal-minded Hillary Clinton holds views that are contrary to what Trump is selling. For instance, she advocates for a more elaborate path to citizenship for immigrants in the US. According to CBS News Survey, 57% of Americans concur with the same view as Hillary that immigrants should be given a chance to better their lives since the sole reason for them leaving their home countries is a lack of comprehensive opportunities. Among the Democrats, 71% want a pathway to citizenship for immigrants. Overall, the fact that Clinton is a liberal has accorded her the support and favor of fellow counterparts and as such, her strategy involves staking out liberal positions to kick start her campaign.

In conclusion, it is quite evident that both conservatives and liberals have a role to play in the above key issues. Although the ideologies and frameworks proposed by the respective groups are different and constant conflict with each other, their importance to society cannot be overlooked. Both are of significance to the society and thus should be recognized as vital elements.
