Title: Political Theory
In this quotation, which appears in John Rawls book The Law of Peoples, the author is talking about the second of two conditions required of any constitutional society that can be regarded as being reasonably just. In other words, there are two conditions that are necessary for any liberal conception of justice to be said to be realistic. The first condition is that such a conception must rely on actual laws of nature as well as achieve the sort of stability that those laws allow, in this case stability for the appropriate reasons.
The second condition, which constitutes the purpose of this paper, is that for a liberal conception of justice to be said to be realistic, is that the principles upon it is founded have to be workable. In other words, the principles underlying this conception of justice must be workable, otherwise they cannot be considered to be realistic. Moreover, these foundational principles must be applicable to the ongoing social and political arrangements. By talking about ongoing socio-political arrangements Rawls (2002) is referring to the various socio-economic policies and projects that the government could be undertaking within the conception of utopian ideals. In this case, a utopian government is one whose socio-political-legal system can be said to be perfect.
In this quotation, Rawls (2002) even gives the example of primary goods, that is, basic rights and liberties, income and wealth, opportunities, and a social basis of respect. Rawls (2002) explains that one of the main features of these goods is that they are workable, that is, one can openly observe a citizen’s share of these goods. Moreover, a comparison of the goods among citizens can be made with ease. The meaning of this quotation, therefore, is that for a liberal conception of justice to be said to be realistic, it must facilitate a workable formula for comparing the variations in the levels of accessibility to primary goods by citizens.
