Will telling children about Columbus encourage children to lose faith in their country? Title: Pre Columbian Indian Civilizations, European Arrivals

In his non-fiction book, A People’s History of the United States, 1492-Present, Howard Zinn presents an eye-opening account of the world starting right before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Bahamas, through the World Wars up until the present day (Zinn 4). He takes a different approach from his counterparts by writing what most historians and education systems omit, for example, refusing to lie about Columbus’ perpetuation of mass murder. Unlike the traditional accounts that portray Columbus as a peaceful and enlightened explorer, Zinn details his brutality, whose main interest was precious goods like gold and whose activities “resulted in complete genocide” (16). With Columbus came expeditions to conquer and dominate the world’s most promising nations and the perishing of about 3 million people to disease, raids and forced labor among other disturbing truths (Zinn 7). He attempts to awaken the masses to look beyond what they study in schools or see in museums.

I believe that we should talk about Columbus to our children as soon as they are old enough to learn and understand the history of the world. Children who are 15 years and above are old enough to comprehend historical events through critical analysis, thus, they should be told the plain truth. This should not only apply to parents and guardians but to the education systems as well. Insensitive and disturbing as the true story of Christopher Columbus may be, our children are entitled to the truth. Knowledge is very important, but what is even more valuable is one that is acquired based on facts rather than biased views formulated by a few individuals to fit the purpose of portraying the country in a positive light.

The outcome of telling the children about Columbus cannot be predicted as each individual responds to information differently from the next. Meanwhile, one can hope that they will not lose faith in their country despite what they will learn about it. Consequently, I recommend that this daunting task be given to all the parents, guardians and education personnel that are capable of sharing the information and making it clear that the past is what it is, and everyone should learn from it in order to understand present events and prepare for a better for the country.
