Speech #1: How Do You Define Yourself? By Lizzie Velasquez
Lizzie Velasquez, a motivational speaker, and author, was born with a rare congenital disease that affects her body in such a way that she cannot gain weight. She was also diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that is known to affect the human body’s connective tissue. When she was in high school, Lizzie Velasquez was named the ugliest woman in the world. This was what led her to become a motivational speaker. In her speech, How Do You Define Yourself? Velasquez talks about what it was like growing up with her condition and how she did not let it define her.
In her speech, Velasquez employed all the five concepts that are pertinent to effective public speaking. In order to manage nervousness during her speech delivery, she tried a lot to be as comfortable as possible with the audience the minute she walked in. The laughter of the audience from her jokes calmed her down. In the same way, Velasquez showed great skill in information organization as she started off from her life as a child, in fifth grade, all the way to her present life.
In her delivery, Velasquez interacted with the audience through humor and structuring her fielded questions appropriately (Jaffe 3). By doing this, the audience remained constantly involved and alert throughout the duration of the speech. More importantly, by the end of her speech, her message had become very clear. Lizzie Velasquez believes that by using the negativity in the life of an individual to make something positive, one can be able to finally define themselves the way they want to. Throughout her speech, she was able to deliver an impeccable speech that many would remember for years to come.
Speech #2: We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a renowned Nigerian novelist and a writer of nonfiction works and short stories. She is known for her famous works; Americanah, Half of a Yellow Sun, and Purple Hibiscus. Because of her works, many have labeled Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie a feminist. To address this label, Chimamanda delivered a speech –We Should all be Feminists– on TED Talks. Her speech seeks to correctly define feminism, what it stands for, and why being called one is nothing to be ashamed of. She also addresses the traditional stereotypes regarding womanhood and manhood and why both parties should be raised in the same way and with the same values and beliefs.
The speech by Chimamanda shows great research and determination to get all definitions right. She also quotes a famous Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the late Wangari Maathai, showing that she has in the least familiarized herself with what it means to be a feminist and the individuals that rooted for it as well. Moreover, Chimamanda organized her speech systematically, starting with the least to the most critical concepts, from her life as a child when she was first called a feminist, in primary school, to her life later on after finally understanding what feminism means and stands for.
Before giving her opinions, Chimamanda ensures that she has adequate examples and illustrations to support the opinions that she puts across. This makes her speech more believable and relatable. Additionally, Chimamanda delivers her speech in a very bold, relatable and compelling way, thus making it a very interactive process with the audience (Gamble et al. 134). In conclusion, despite the jokes and humor presented in her speech, the speaker still puts across her information and influences the audience into becoming feminists considering that feminism is not limited to the women only.
Speech #3: The Power of Introverts by Susan Cain
Through her mission-based company, Quiet Revolution, and her book named Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, Susan Cain has started a revolution that is based on the belief that it is okay to be an introvert and that introverts are just as useful, effective and important as extroverts. Cain is a former lawyer and writer who has made it her business to make people see the worth of introverts and by using TED Talks as one of her avenues. Her speech, The Power of Introverts, explores the lives of introverts.
During the speech, Cainmentions that she practices a lot before speaking to a large crowd because as an introvert, she is not used to public speaking. By practicing, she is able to calm herself, thus avoiding being nervous on stage. Her speech also shows that she has employed extensive research. This can be seen in the way she reports that a third to half of the population comprises introverted people, and that Mahatma Gandhi and Eleanor Roosevelt were both introverts. Such research capabilities are great qualities of a public speaker.
In addition, there is a way in which Susan Cain organizes her information in a manner that is easy to follow. Her thoughts are executed very well and in an order that makes it possible for anyone arriving late into the speech can be able to follow through and know something about the topic (Aden 284). She delivers the speech in a factual and chatty manner. Very many people victimize introverts, despite knowing that many of them actually make good leaders. In her speech, Cainlets everyone know that introverts may just be as incredibly talented as extroverts.
