Drug Testing in jobs and sports

The issue of drug testing especially in major professional sports still remains a bone of contention up to date worldwide. Many people argue that it is not necessary as it violates the privacy of those concerned since the drug tests require specimens such as saliva, blood, and urine to be handed in under close supervision. However, I strongly hold the view that drug testing is vital and should be enforced as a requirement when it comes to jobs and sporting activities for a number of reasons. A close look at the history of performance-enhancing drugs, reasons as to why people continually use them, both long-term and short- term effects, and reasons why drug testing is necessary will constitute a larger part of the essay in efforts to support my argument.

A look at the history of drugs, specifically performance enhancing drugs, uncovers appalling facts in addition to revealing the origin of the use of these drugs. History shows that these drugs have long been used in the sporting world and their origin dates back to the original Olympic Games from 776BC to 383BC where ancient Greek athletes used hallucinogens, herbs, and other potions to boost their performance in the games. Progressively with time, the practice of doping as it is commonly referred to, crept into modern times and is currently a worldwide issue that has formed a subject of discussion in many international forums. It goes without saying that drug use in sports hinders fair play especially to other athletes who do not use these performance-enhancing drugs. In light of this reality, the World Anti-Doping Agency was formed in 1999 as an independent body charged with the responsibility of developing anti-doping policies in addition to accrediting the laboratories used for testing samples. This move has yielded positive results since the sole purpose for testing athletes is to ensure no unfair play occurs.

There are myriad reasons as to why both employees and athletes alike use drugs in their professions and as such, they strongly advocate for the rooting out of drug testing as a requirement. Among the numerous reasons is the fact that most employees claim that the use of such drugs helps them manage their stress and pressure that comes along with practicing their professions. On the other hand, athletes use them to enhance their performance and physical attributes to counter the effects of fatigue and reduce their time for recovery after a strenuous activity (Donohoe and Johnson 200). These may appear to be valid reasons as to why both employees and athletes find these drugs appealing but their use leads to many negative outcomes. Continuous use of drugs in general has its own consequences both long-and short-term, and this is one of the reasons why drug testing is vital and essential when it comes to sports and other professions (Wadler and Hainline 39).

To begin with, the use of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids, for example, in the world of sports has serious implications for the health of the users. These steroids have substances which have tissue-building and masculinizing attributes (Mottram and George 67). The anabolic part affects the growth of bones and muscles whereas the androgenic part affects the development of male sexual characteristics (Sharmilee and Mehendale 111). This has led to long-term health effects such as infertility, hypertension, liver and kidney failure, impotence, and aggressive behavior. Other serious short-term effects are withdrawal and impaired judgment (Ramachandra et al. 593). In addition to the health effects, those affected in the long run end up being fired or suspended permanently in their various professions since they are not able to work effectively to deliver the desired output (David and Reardon 21). Athletes have been known to be suspended as a result of doping and as such, they miss out on major sporting activities such as the Olympic Games. Recently, Russian athletes have been on the spotlight due to doping accusations, whereby they risk being banned from participating in the Olympics.

In light of the above analysis, there is a need to strongly inculcate drug testing into major professions and sports. First, drug testing enhances safety in respective professions. This constitutes the main reason for drug testing especially in cases where the employees are required to engage in manual labor and handle clients. Testing also protects the public by according them the assurance that all employees are fit, sober, and physically suited to attend to their needs. This also goes a long way in upholding the reputation of the companies involved and improving the quality of work and output since all employees operate at optimum.

Secondly, drug testing also acts as a prevention mechanism. In jobs, for instance, random drug tests and tests prior to employment are useful in that they prevent firms from hiring people who are drug users. Random tests also aid in stopping hired employees from abusing illegal drugs and other substances further enhancing better performance in working areas. In sports, such tests serve to monitor athletes to stop them from using enhancement substances as well as encourage them that constant practice and natural training can effectively yield far much better output.

Thirdly, drug testing helps in maintaining fair play in both sporting activities and other jobs. It is a well-known and an undisputed fact that employees and sports athletes who use drugs and other performance-enhancing substances have an added advantage over others who do not use them when it comes to executing their various activities. Some exhibit increased motivation and exercise endurance especially in sports whereas others go for long hours with feeling fatigued. Drug testing effectively levels the playing field by ensuring that no one gets an unfair advantage over others. As such, there is a positive correlation between the employee or athlete and the output he /she yields. This also helps in giving a true reflection of the performance of workers under similar conditions and singling out the areas that require improvement generally as opposed to the false picture of success that is often painted by performance-enhancers.

Furthermore, drug testing helps to maintain the productivity level of a firm as well as saving funds. It is estimated that problems associated with drug use cost $80billion in lost productivity in a year according to the US Department of Labor (2011). This is mainly due to the health implications imposed by these drugs. This is a problem that can be countered by drug testing in that agreeing to this initiative by both athletes and employees will allow them to enjoy benefits of optimum productivity, increased returns in form of profits and elevating their health status in general. In areas of work, for instance, issues tied to drug use such as aggression, absenteeism and injuries are significantly diminished, contributing to the overall performance of the business. Athletes alike are also able to perform their sporting activities such as running and lifting weight more effectively. Thus, their productivity levels are elevated and they are able to perform well and reap huge benefits from their work.

Drug testing also protects jobs especially from legal liability. Testing of employees prior to hiring helps to safeguard organizations from the legal liability of having to deal with employees who are indulging in hard and illicit drugs. Testing acts as a sieve which separates drug users and non-users. In so doing, firms are freed from the risk of handling drug users who are hiding from the law since the larger majority of the workers is deemed fit as a result of the administered drug test. In sports, countries whose athletes are found to be using drugs to boost performance are held liable and accountable as seen in the case of Russia. This is an issue that could have been averted by a simple drug test to avoid tarnishing the reputation of other athletes and the country as well.

In conclusion, it is undoubtedly evident that the benefits of drug testing far outweigh the disadvantages. Thus, drug testing is vital and should be incorporated into jobs and sports as a requirement since it improves quite a number of areas including credibility of employees and sportsmen. Similarly, areas such as productivity and quality, whose role cannot be taken lightly, can only be improved by adopting a drug test initiative among key players in all professions. Consequently, every person including professionals are called upon to adopt a drug-free lifestyle in order to root out this menace which clearly the false impression that people can only achieve their goals with the help of drugs.
