Title: Nursing Brochure Review: A Guide to Infection Prevention for Outpatient Settings: Minimum Expectations for Safe Care

In November 2015, the brochure “A Guide to Infection Prevention for Outpatient Settings: Minimum Expectations for Safe Care” was published to give an ambulatory checklist that is essential for infection prevention to and from patients at any given time. Ambulatory or outpatient care refers to the treatment or care administered to patients in facilities where the patients are not admitted overnight (The Joint Commission, 2015). I believe that the information provided in this specific brochure is beneficial to both the patients and the health care personnel that attend to them as it is important to inform as well as to be informed. While it is impossible to stop infections completely, it is possible to prevent them. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.

Summary of Brochure

The main argument being made in the brochure is that certain elements are vital in preventing the transmission of pathogens in outpatient settings. These elements include administrative measures, educating and training healthcare personnel, monitoring and reporting all healthcare-associated infections, and adhering to the standard precautions by safely handling equipment and practicing respiratory hygiene etiquette.

Moreover, the brochure explains that administrative measures cover the prioritization and dedication of resources to the prevention of infections. This is done by developing infection prevention and occupational health programs that serve as a reference point, ensuring the availability of equipment that help in the adherence to standard precautions like the use of gloves, hiring a highly trained personnel in infection prevention to manage the programs involved in ensuring the prevention of infections, and the development of rules, regulations, and practices in regard to infection prevention.

The next point made in the brochure is that educating and training healthcare personnel upon orientation to the facility is key in ensuring that the policies laid for infection prevention are understood and followed to the letter in order to prevent the potential spread of infections to other patients and healthcare personnel as well. Adhering to standard precautions, for example, by the use of protective equipment and practicing safe injection also helps in preventing the spread of infections as they facilitate an appropriate decision-making process regardless of the level of risk.

Lastly, communication between patients and healthcare providers is encouraged in order to educate patients on the symptoms of potential infections associated with various medical procedures. This is made possible by monitoring healthcare-associated infections and performing regular audits that help in the prevention efforts

Evaluation of Brochure

I chose to write a review on infection prevention in ambulatory care because I believe that more often than not, hospitals and facilities that provide such care are prone to exposure to infections. It is therefore important to educate the public on ways in which to prevent such infections. This brochure excelled in providing important and detailed information on the ways in which infections are spread and how to prevent them. The information was presented very clearly and it highlighted all the important points in form of subtopics after which it listed a summary of the recommendations to be followed.

The information provided in terms of safety and precautions when dealing with patients is very beneficial as it helps reduce the risk of infections being transferred from one patient to another or from one patient to a healthcare personnel and vice versa. It is therefore advisable to use and apply the recommendations that are given in patient education and the administration of health care facilities. The information contained in the brochure is supported by The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (2013) and MedPro (2015), who agree developing an infection prevention plan is the first step towards enhancing quality of care.

It is important for all patients, health care providers and health care facilities at large to access this article in one way or the other because with exposure to the ways in which one can prevent infections, the mentioned parties are able to apply them in their day to day lives and help reduce their spread. Nursing colleges and institutions can also benefit from this brochure by sensitizing their students on infection prevention and its importance. Moreover, this information can lead to an increase in patient safety levels through prevention of outbreaks.

Conclusion

Outpatient and ambulatory care facilities are exposed to the risk of infection outbreaks just as much as inpatient facilities. Therefore, in order to prevent these outbreaks it is important that the administrations of the healthcare facilities in question dedicate their full attention and resources towards ensuring that all infection prevention plans and strategies are applied and that highly trained personnel involved in infection prevention are hired to ensure that the policies are always implemented. Following the brochure’s recommendations will undoubtedly reduce any outbreak of infections both from the patients to healthcare providers and vice versa.
