Poem and Reflection

Poem

I am a leader.

I am a transformative leader.

I work with others to achieve organizational goals.

I encourage my followers to see opportunity in every challenge.

I inspire my followers to transform all challenges into opportunities.

I am emotionally intelligent.

I am always building relationships.

I am sensitive to followers’ emotional and tacit needs.

Always looking for dynamic ways of pairing people with tasks.

And to explain the organization’s vision and its relevance to every follower’s life.

I am an organizational champion.

Always thinking of new ways to inspire followers.

I encourage them to excel in their respective workgroups.

I am always working with my followers to achieve various organizational goals.

I am a leader who inspires and motivates my followers to address problems rather than give up.

Reflection

While creating the poem, I started with a brainstorming session in order to identify all the characteristics that best define me as a leader. I then attempted to expound on those characteristics based on my understanding of effective leadership. On this basis, I identified three characteristics: transformational leader, emotionally intelligent person, and organizational champion. I then expounded on each characteristic in order to come up with the three stanzas of the poem. It was an easy activity because I am well aware of my abilities as a leader. This enabled me to write down a description of each of the three characteristics fairly easily.

Meanwhile, the single line in the poem that best articulates the most important aspect of my identity is “Always looking for dynamic ways of pairing people with tasks.” This line tells the reader that I am a firm believer in the unique talents and abilities conferred upon each individual by nature. For this reason, I always endeavor to assign tasks to followers based on their abilities. My sense of self has a positive impact on my role as a leader because it helps me to maintain a strong self-esteem at all times. Lastly, my role as a leader has been profoundly shaped by my social locations and identities in the sense that I learn a lot about people’s fears and aspirations, and this greatly determines the personal and organizational goals that I prioritize.
