Strategies for Interview
The aim of this paper is to highlight the various strategies that individuals being interviewed for a job position should employ in order to increase their chances of landing the job. One should be sure to do the right thing before the interview. This entails knowing what to bring to the interview room, which research to conduct, and the interview method being used. The interviewee should also wear appropriate attire for the interview. Moreover, there are several things that one should not do. One of them is being overconfident.
It helps to know a lot about what will happen on the day of the interview, including the identities of the interviewers and the search committee. One should also know how the schedule will be like and how long the interview will take. This enables the interviewee to prepare well for his presentation, various types of questions, and research material. Other areas that require preparation include getting directions, accounting for traffic, and mechanisms for facilitating early arrival.
The interview begins once the interviewee leaves the house. He must remember when to turn off the phone as well as how to arrange transcripts, job description information, lists containing co-curricular activities, and copies of resume and references. Other areas where information should be properly documented include classes taken, working experience, and intangible skills.
An interviewee who is well prepared for the interview should also know the company well. Some of the most important details regarding the company include its history, objectives, mission, vision, products, organizational structure, and competitors. Questions relating to the company may be asked in the context of different interview formats, including traditional face-to-face interviews, breakfast meetings, committee or panel, telephone interview, video interview, and case studies (Galassiand Galassi 190).
During the day of the interview, it is important to make a provision for the use of a landline whenever possible. Additionally, wearing the right attire on that day will also increase chances of passing the interview. One should never wear jeans, sandals, leggings, or tennis shoes when going for an interview. The ideal attire includes a two-piece suit with a plain-colored shirt and tie, dress shoes, and dark socks.
Always smile and shake the interviewers’ hands upon entering the interview room. Moreover, maintain eye contact, avoid too much movement of hands when answering questions, and maintain a good posture. Speak audibly and remember to put on a tone that shows that you are excited about the job prospect. It is also important to avoid talking negatively about one’s experiences.
Other things that an interviewee can do freely during an interview include proper use of non-verbal cues, letting answers flow easily and naturally, saying what one had planned to say, and asking a question whenever something is not clear. These actions mean a lot to the interviewers because they demonstrate that the interviewee possesses both technical and leadership skills.
When talking about oneself, the interviewee should be keen on what to say regarding college activities, academic qualifications, working experience, interest in the field, and why he thinks the company should hire him. One way to demonstrate one’s suitability for the job is to outline the new skills and ideas that he hopes to bring into the organization and to explain why he thinks that other candidates cannot do the same thing. Once the interview is finally over, the interview should remember to ask about the timeframe within which the company will communicate the recruitment decision and the mode of communication that will be used to deliver this decision. Lastly, the interview should take the final courteous step of writing a note thanking the interviewers for giving him an opportunity to express himself.
