Introduction

The participation of women in sports had always been faced by a lot of restrictions and barriers. The sports world was seen as a male domain and any woman who ventured into this territory was subject to sexual harassment. However, since the 20th Century, the number of women involved in sports has risen though it varies across countries. The Title IX of 1972 in America paved way to the global realization of the need to empower more women into sports (Lopiano, 2015). I believe it is important to encourage women to be actively involved in sports as they can pursue careers from scholarships, mentor younger girls as well as improve on their health. Pursue successful careers

Most sport foundations offer scholarship programs to players for education and careers. Young athletes are said to be better academically with higher chances of graduating from colleges. The Women’s Sports Foundation points out that, women who have a sports background in their resume tend to fit in well in work setting than those without (Women’s Sports Foundation, 2017). They are already exposed to working in teams, following instructions, learning from mistakes, competing and working under pressure hence having developed life skills like setting goals that become practical later in career lives.

Mentorship

Successful sportswomen will certainly be role models for younger girls who want to be involved in sports. By handling the pressures that come with the competitive world of sports, they build their self esteem and confidence. This is important in their daily interactions as it prepares them to handle social and cultural stigmas that could have resulted to self pity and lack of self worth and consequently depression. Involvement in sports enables them to stay in support groups that empower women to be involved in sports at earlier ages so that they can find activities they are more interested in and pursue them even in later years.

Health benefits

Health experts globally agree that constant exercising and physical activity boost the human health wellbeing. Comparatively, younger males are more likely to get enough physical activity than the younger girls hence it is important to encourage them to be more active. Knowing that people tend to engage in physical activities lesser as they get older, it is important to nurture the girls to develop a sporting culture that they will be actively involved in even as they age. The psychological wellbeing of sportswomen is better than of women who aren’t involved in sports (Women’s Sport Foundation, 2017) hence meaning they are more stable mentally and emotionally. Other than that, lifestyle diseases like obesity and diabetes can be avoided. Interestingly, the Women’s Sports Foundation also points out that participating in sports helps in bone strengthening thus reducing chances of getting brittle bones when they age. There are also reduced risks of getting breast cancer for active young women and girls by 60%.

Conclusion

The Title IX helped in opening up opportunities for the females to get recognized in this field in America and eventually globally. When women and girls are encouraged to get actively involved in sports, it provides both short term and long term benefits. It improves their psychological and health wellbeing, paves the way for them into successful careers and the younger girls are mentored to lead positive and fulfilling lives.
