Child Psychology- Personal Reflection- Behavioral Analysis (Child psychology Essay Help)

Behavioral analysis helps us to understand the different behaviors of individuals. It is concerned with describing, understanding, and predicting the changing behavior of individuals (Handerson & Thompson, 2015). Behavioral analysis helps individuals to overcome different problems that they are facing and improve their overall life. Central to this paper is a discussion of the procrastinating habit that I would like to change as it is negatively affecting my academic performance. (Child psychology Essay Help)

Behaviour Analysis

Step 1: Problem category: My problem falls underperforming a task category. I often find myself caught up with deadlines and always perform tasks from the last minute to the deadline.

Step 2: Determining the problem type: Unwilling to do the task. I find myself always finding a reason to postponed doing a task.

Step 3: Determining the problem cause: I’m always procrastinating and unwilling to do the task until the deadline approaches.

Step 4: Select a problem solution: Determining what reinforces the problem and finding a way to eliminate the reinforcing things (Handerson & Thompson, 2015). I always feel that I’m too busy to perform a task and keep postponing doing the task until the deadline approaches.

Self-management plan

Step 1:  Observable and measurable behavior you wish to change.

I want to change my procrastinating behavior as it is negatively affecting my academic performance. Procrastinating involves individuals choosing to do something different from what they should be doing (Svartdal et al., 2020). In procrastination, an individual ignores an unpleasant task that is more important in favor of the enjoyable and easier one.

Step 2: Record the target behavior, the setting in which it occurs, the antecedent event leading to the behavior, and the consequences resulting from the behavior.

Understand why I’m procrastinating. I avoid tasks that I find boring and tend to focus on pleasant tasks. Most times, tasks that I find boring are essential; for example, I find doing a school assignment boring, and most time, I wait until the deadline is reached. Whenever I want to do an assignment before the due date, I feel too busy to perform the task and postponed the task to a later time. Some of the adverse effects of my procrastination habit include poor academic performance; my grades are deteriorating as I always do my assignment in a hurry to finish, thus invest less time in researching (Svartdal et al., 2020). I always feel guilty after submitting a school project in a hurry as I know it’s not my best work.

Step 3: Setting a goal I can achieve

Developing a to-do list and setting specific deadlines to complete the tasks helped me self-monitor my behaviors. Self-monitoring allows an individual to change their behavior and adapt to a situation (Svartdal et al., 2020). I monitored myself by measuring my behavior and recording it against a standard behavior chart.

Step 4: Change the setting and the antecedent events preventing the target behavior from occurring.

Term papers with long deadlines facilitate my procrastinating habit as I feel that I have plenty of time to complete the paper, but I always end up doing the paper at the last minute. Every time I want to do the project or assignment before the due date, something more important always comes up, and I feel that I’m too busy to do the paper at that particular time. I changed setting and the antecedent event by self-meditation, thus increasing my concentration when performing the task (Codina et al., 2020).

Step 5 Change the consequences that reinforce the behavior.

To change the consequences that facilitate procrastination behavior, a person can engage in self-medication. Self-meditation has helped me concentrate on performing the specified task as it eliminates distractions that cause procrastination (Svartdal et al., 2020). I often find myself having difficulties committing to a task and avoiding doing it. Self-meditation helped keep my mind calm and helped me focus when performing a task.

Step 6 keep accurate records of your target behavior- your success and failure.

To deal with procrastination habits, a person needs to keep a target behavior which they will use to self-measure their success and failure. Self-measurement involves directly reporting the success and failures that hinder a person from achieving the specified goals. By keeping a self-measurement of my success and failure, I’ve managed to change my behavior as I had a clear outline of my success and failures.

Step 7 Develop a plan for rewarding yourself when you meet your daily goal and a plan to punish a levied fine on yourself when you fail to meet your daily goal.

For motivation rewarding oneself when you complete a target task will help increase the motivation of finishing tasks on time. Self-monitoring will help monitor if the task completed has achieved the set goals. Rewarding yourself with a treat such as buying your favorite food or tickets to watch a movie will motivate you to do a task (Svartdal et al., 2020). Levying a punishment on oneself will ensure that a person meets the set goals.

Step 8 Arrange a plan to maintain the goals you have reached.

Prioritize every task that should be done against a set targetof when to achieve the task. Highlight the rewards, punishment, and consequences of not finishing a task within the set time frame. Holding oneself accountable for not completing a task on time will help one maintain the goals they have to achieve in the self-management plan (Codina et al., 2020). Reminding yourself of the consequences, such as a fail grade for doing a task in a hurry to meet the deadline, will eventually lead to poor grades at the end of the semester will help with self-maintenance to achieve the goals.

In conclusion, through the behavior analysis and the self-management plan, I’ve dealt with my procrastinating behavior. The behavior analysis has helped me identify the cause of the problem and develop solutions to deal with the problem. Through the self-management plan, I was able to develop steps to help deal with the problem. After identifying the antecedent event leading to the behavior, I set up goals and deadlines that would help me avoid procrastination. I created an incentive to reward myself after completing every task, and through this, I’ve seen some changes.
