Discussion paragraph is to analyze and look for correlations between the research that was done and research that still needs to be done. Technology has significantly affected the healthcare sector. Strong technological advancements are being made and improved at a very rapid rate. The most dominant technology advancements in healthcare today include electronic health records, robotic surgery, portal technology, self-service kiosks, remote monitoring tools, wireless communication, tele-medication, and m-health. Healthcare technology adoption has been necessitated by crippling shortcomings rendering the sector incapable of dealing with emerging health situations sustainably. Changes in lifestyle and climate have influenced the general health status globally by leading to the emergence of new and unidentified conditions. For this reason, the health sector has been forced to adjust and improve in terms of research and technology to handle these new conditions better. Despite the healthcare technology advancement, overall care quality remains poor. This is because of over-emphasizing technology improvements and illnesses instead of focusing on the core principle of healthcare delivery which is the preservation of human life.

Patient care is the responsibility of doctors, with nurses playing a coordinating role. The latter play a critical role in the restoration of health for patients. Traditionally, the process has been a hands-on practice whereby nurses predominantly depended on their senses and learned medical knowledge in patient care. However, in recent times, technology has been integrated into the healthcare sector in efforts to promote efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Many people have heralded the technological advancements in the sector as the onset of a new age in which patients will get cost-effective solutions to health problems and enhanced outcomes. However, like all other systems developed by humans, these technological systems are susceptible to error. The expected benefits of technology have not been fully realized because some of these technologies are poorly design, are not properly maintained, and do not patient-centered. To be able to understand why healthcare advancements are not guaranteeing improved patient care, it is necessary to understand various advancements, the patient needs that led to their development, and their relevance.

Technological Advancements

The electronic health record (EHR) the first technological advancement to be addressed in this paper. This technology has been in use in modern hospitals for many years, and it involves establishing electronic records of patient information. EHR has led to the integration of records in various medical aspects, including patient information, pharmaceutical inventory, and medical staff. Although this system has provided a uniform and centralized medical database that is easy to access, it also carries several drawbacks as well. Firstly, there is a huge privacy concern related to HER due to the consideration that all patient’s medical information is sent to a centralized location (Spekowius, 2006). This means that it is easily retrievable by medical personnel or other people who may use authorized or unauthorized means. The second limitation is the high cost of integrating this system into each hospital and then synchronizing all databases from many hospitals. This high start up cost has translated into high general medical expenses, making access to quality medical and patient care unaffordable. Finally, there have been recorded mix-ups in patient information that often leads to wrong diagnosis and treatments being offered to the wrong patients, leading to health complications.

The second advancement that has gained currency in the sector is robotic surgery, which allows surgeons to perform delicate and precise surgery with minimum invasion. It has become useful in heart and eye surgeries which are often delicate. Robotic surgery has mostly been proved successful but its main drawback is cost. Patients are required to pay very expensively to access this highly effective healthcare service. Since the cost tends to be beyond the reach of most patients, the resulting impression is that the technology has not significantly contributed to improved patient outcomes. Therefore, patients miss out on quality patient care due to its un-affordability. Additionally, surgical errors brought about by robotic errors or poor maintenance could easily cost one’s life or further complications (Scott, 2014).

The third advancement is m-health, a platform that allows doctors, nurses, and patients to check on healthcare information and processes from the comfort of their homes using their phones and computers. Patients are directed on basic functions such as blood pressure measurements, weight measurements. All they need to do is to transfer this information to doctors. This allows patients to be active participants in their own recovery process. However, this transferring of medical opinion to the patients could lead to misdiagnosis or medical negligence. The World Wide Web has become an extremely popular repository of diverse sources of information including health information. Patients now rely on diverse information sources other than those specified by their doctors even on personal health matters. The level of patient care that nurses provide has also been significantly affected by this information revolution due to the strong sense of empowerment among patients. This development is counterproductive since it suppresses the vital role that nurses play in promoting proper and long-term health for patients. Surveys have revealed that patients are making inaccurate decisions based on unreliable information sources, leading to health complications (Ciampa 2012). It is unfortunate that in many cases doctors and nurses are using m-health technology to simplify their roles at the expense of quality health (Ciampa, 2012).

The final advancement addressed in this paper encompasses sensors, wearable technology, and remote monitoring tools. These monitoring tools and sensors can be used at home, thereby reducing frequent visits to physicians. They are used to collects patients data and monitor progress of the treatment process. Unfortunately, this technology also limits proper patient care particularly when the gadgets become faulty or further refinements are required for enhanced precision and accuracy. Telemedicine is a communication system that provides medical care without interruption and often from a distance. Like other aspects of m-health, telemedicine technology remains work in progress in terms of the need to resolve emerging challenges such as focus on illness at the expense of human aspects such as patient isolation and ethics. Nurses whose roles have been taken over by these technologies are concerned that this approach to healthcare delivery fails to focus holistically on human wellbeing (Mantas, 2013).  A recent ICU encounter revealed that these ailing people have mostly been left to machine observance with limited human interaction from medical practitioners (Mantas, 2013). Consequently, many healthcare providers end up recording very poor patient outcomes.

Technology advancements are definitely edging obsolete equipment that have traditionally been relied on in the medical field. More importantly, these advancements have achieved a lot in a wide range of medical instances. It is however important to appeal logically to medical leaders to ensure that the medical codes of ethics are maintained and not over-shadowed by technology solutions. Hospitals and medical facilities need also to develop other traditional solutions that can go alongside the new technology solutions. Leaders in the healthcare sector should concentrate on the patients as well and not just on making medical breakthroughs. Technology across the board has thrived often at the expense of humanity and quality of life. Developers need to use patient friendly technology and testing while developing their systems to create patient specific solutions.

Ethically, healthcare has the responsibility of providing care and suitable conditions that facilitate maintenance of quality of life (Pierson, 2007). Medical practitioners are under codes of conduct to practice their profession in service of humanity and the preservation of life by maintaining high professional standards. The introduction of technology has demonstrated unregulated entry and dominance which goes against the codes of medical practice. A system has to be developed that will ensure that every new technological development complies with the codes of medical practice and with the goal of promoting human wellbeing. Moreover, patients have the responsibility to maintain ethical healthy services by pointing out unethical tendencies when they are detected.

Discussion

Research has yielded crucial insights in terms of current technological systems that are being implemented in the health sector globally. Nevertheless, further research needs to be done on how to perfect these systems and to eliminate errors related to the use of computer systems. For instance, accuracy is vital in providing top-notch medical solutions. Nurses and doctors should appreciate these advancements not as modes of eliminating their roles but as opportunities for complementing them. At the same time, they have become over-dependent on technology to the extent of abandoning their core professional roles. Intriguingly, most doctors and nurses do not know how to operate these systems. Thus, they have significantly contributed to the pre-determined errors of these operations. Health practitioners need to allocate more time and resources to adequately train and master these technologies. In this way, they will be able to spot vulnerabilities and alert the developers who will then rectify and improve on their mode of operation (Fairchild, 2012).

Finally, it is worthwhile to note that technology was introduced with a genuine intention to make life easier and more productive for the overall progress of humanity. Creating a balance between technology advancement and human advancement will ensure a harmonious, complementary existence between both aspects of contemporary healthcare operations. With these efforts in place, the health care system is poised to soar to great heights in terms of both technological adoption ad patient outcomes.
