In China, there are three types of education systems for nurses: baccalaureate, associate, and certificate. By comparison to China, the US seems to have a more modern system of nursing education. In this system, there are four levels of nursing education are available for nurses; namely baccalaureate, diploma, associate, and certificate.

In China, the authors trace the history of modern nursing to the activities of missionaries during the late nineteenth century. Throughout the twentieth century Chinese nursing encountered numerous problems. Revolutions disrupted the practice of nursing. They also alienated China from the West. In such a situation, Chinese nurses were unable to share scholarly ideas with other professionals in the West. In contrast, the practice of nursing in the US did not go through such problems. Although challenges have always been present in this field in the US, they were not as problematic as in China.

Since the late 1970s, the Chinese government has been making serious efforts to promote nursing. One of the ways to do this was by separating the management system of nurses from that of physicians. Certificate programs were introduced to produce nursing technicians. Moreover, the associate degree program was introduced as a higher-level system of nursing education. As for the baccalaureate program the aim is to produce professionals who can work confidently as clinical nurses, educators, and management experts.

In the US, major changes were also taking place in the field of nursing during the late nineteenth century (Shin, Shin, & Li, 2002). According to Shin, Shin, & Li (2002), many efforts were being made to eradicate class differences that posed a major threat to the development of nursing in the country. Another major difference is that in the US, advancements were being made in medicine and medical technology. These advancements were more far-reaching compared to those of China. As a result, US nurses have traditionally tended to be more experienced than Chinese and Korean nurses (Shin, Shin, & Li, 2002).

The authors conclude that nursing education has developed a great deal both China and the US. The authors also note that in both China and the US, barriers to nursing higher education have increased in modern times. However, both countries have numerous nursing problems to deal with. According to Shin, Shin, & Li (2002), social and political factors should be explored in efforts to deal with these problems.
