Case General Expectations
In the Case Assignments, students will assume the role of a Manager in Employee Communications at
a large service firm, such as a bank, or an advertising or consulting firm. Students will assume this
role throughout the Case Assignments and be challenged with different scenarios, requiring written
and verbal communication.
Formal citations and a bibliography are required unless otherwise stated.

Dear Ms. Guyan,

It is with deep regret that I inform you that you are being laid off from your position as assistant of the purchasing department effective 22/04/2027. As you know, GenCyan Company has been experiencing financial problems this fiscal year. Despite applying cost-cutting measures in all the departments, expenses continue to mount. Sales have not improved and are instead decreasing alarmingly.


On reviewing our options we have come to the conclusion that we need to lay off 10 percent of our workforce in order for the company to maintain profitability. It is for the aforementioned reason that we have decided to eliminate the purchasing department and all positions therein. Purchasing functions will move to the marketing department.

A representative from Human Resources will call you to set up a meeting in which all your questions will be answered with regards to severance pay and separation benefits. On behalf of GenCyan Company, we want to thank you for your service and express hope for your continued success. The following are the ideas I used from the readings. Firstly, I learned that layoffs only occur when absolutely necessary. It is advisable to do the layoffs with the assistance of an attorney to make sure they are legal and non-discriminatory (Human Resource Services (2009). I noted that most readings indicate that one should give reasons for the layoff before developing criteria for determining which positions will be affected, deciding on an effective date of the layoff and then giving as much notice as possible (Business Management Daily, 2016). Moreover, it is important for a representative from the Human Resources Department to hold a layoff meeting with each employee to explain the dispositions of benefits. Throughout this process, using the right tone is pertinent to avoid sounding impersonal or condescending.
