Journal Entry

Question

When writing your journal entries you must engage in with your chosen text or moment in the text. You may engage in a number of different ways. You could 1, reflect on your experience reading the text 2, engage with a theme / issue/ character/moment in the plot 3, be creative (no more than 2 entries) 4 make connections between stories and your personal experiences. My paper is 280 word. Here’s how my teacher want it: -Quality of journal entry. Clearly relate to a specific text. -thoughtful engagement, develop response. -Structure application of the guidelines provided in assignment, coherent entries that hold together. -Quality writing. Appropriate tone minimal grammatical errors and good vocabulary, strong syntax.

Answer

As I read through Beth Brant (Degonwadonti) I am filled with empathy. I am keen on how she expressed the agony she underwent because of racial discrimination. I guess it was not easy for her to cope with life after she was separated from her parents; her father was imprisoned and her mother abandoned them because of racism. The protagonist in the critical writing “A Long Story” did not fully exploit childhood for she got married at a younger age and had children who were consumed by civilization (Disch, 1998). Equally, her children were taken away from her. She states that “She looks for her children,” and “the white man is like a ghost, he slips in and out where they cannot see and has taken her children”.Besides, her husband divorced her. She expresses how civilization has eroded the culture she upheld; they are expected to believe in a god, and that there is nothing they can do. Her brother cannot understand her pain because he is equally consumed by civilization. She similarly struggles with her nature as a lesbian. While she acknowledges her sexual reality, the society condemns her for it. Everybody considers her mad since she has not embraced the white man’s lifestyle (Moses & Goldie, 1998).

The struggle to stick to a habit that only the bearer understands did not end with Beth Brant’s literary work. I have equally faced a similar scenario at some point in life. I live at a time when everybody around me feels that working hard to meet the daily needs and achieve desired expectation is the ultimate driving force. I have to be on duty almost all day long and at night, meaning I only have spare a few minutes’ time to sleep and rejuvenate for the next day`s task. I argue out with both my family and friends who always insist that we need time to spend with each other. They always ask me to set aside leisure time that we can use to get involved in fun activities to enhance our bonding. Like Brant, I might have to learn to bow to their demands and living standards, albeit desperately.
