Introduction
The healthcare industry has always been highly competitive especially for the nurses who form the core of the quality of care. Over time, nurses have realized that the best way to achieve career development is by advancing their education. The Master’s Prepared Nursing program is one of the ways in which the graduates from the program can be able to keep up with the ever-changing and ever-evolving health care industry. The program also offers a wider range of roles that the nurse can take as well as a better paying position and career path. The purpose of this narrative is to interview a nurse that has graduated from the MPN program in order to determine the significance of advanced education as well as to gather insights regarding the same. Her story is one that involves a lot of hard work, resilience and a rise through the ranks with every milestone achieved.
Overview of the Master’s-Prepared Nurse’s Career
The interviewee started her career as a staff nurse in telemetry. She got the job after successfully completing her Associate’s degree in Nursing. She maintained her position at the acute care setting of the telemetry unit for slightly over two years after which she decided to obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing on a part-time basis. She took a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree at the University of Phoenix. On completion of her bachelor’s degree, she was promoted to the position of a supervisor in the same telemetry unit. She remained the supervisor for a period of six years during which she served in various positions as an interim manager and lead trainer. She, however, soon decided to get an advanced degree to become master’s prepared nurse.
Reason for Seeking Graduate Education
One of the main reasons why the interviewee decided to seek a graduate education was because she believes in the power of education. She specifically believes that education opens up the door to many more opportunities. Moreover, in her case, she wanted to be able to specialize in a certain field and become the best in it. Having a master degree on nursing education would in turn enable her to become a nursing educator. With her years of experience, she had realized along the way that she particularly enjoys sharing information as well as mentoring and empowering nursing students. Additionally, one cannot overlook the fact that graduate education makes it possible to receive a better salary and better position (Gerard et al., 2014).
Description of Present Position and Role
Currently, my interviewee works as a Clinical Nurse Manager at a med-surg-telemetry floor. Clearly, her hunger for education paid off as she ended up doing what she loves. As a clinical nurse manager, she evaluates the nursing staff performance. Through her evaluation, she is able to encourage the nursing staff to improve in their areas of weaknesses as well as to better their strengths. The interviewee also contributes to staff professional development by training them on certain programs and making them see the importance of professional development. Her other roles include setting up staff assignments and creating and planning appropriate work schedules for all the nursing stuff. In all her work, she mostly enjoys the fact that she gets to be a mentor and team leader to others.
Usefulness of Graduate Education for Present Role
The graduate education that she received gave her the necessary skills required to work in her current capacity (Lisa et al., 2014). The graduate education has undoubtedly been useful as it has helped her achieve an advanced nursing role as a nurse manager. The more knowledge she gained, the more she was able to utilize all her capabilities so as to make the med-surg-tel floor as good as it is at present. The graduate education made her more qualified to take up any role she wanted within the scope f her education thus enabling her to become what she is. It is also worth noting that her education prowess is to be credited for her ability to evaluate the nursing staff effectively, create appropriate working schedules as well as her ability to lead a huge team of nurses. As a MSN and Clinical Nurse manager, the interviewee has been able to focus on patient care and service delivery.
Pearls of Wisdom She Is Willing To Share
Before concluding the interviewee, she shared certain words of encouragement that I believe everyone ought to believe by heart. She had three main things to say about her career and education journey. First, her main message was that dreams have no time limit. It took her 10 years to achieve her dream of being a clinical nurse manager. Secondly, she insisted on the importance of embracing oneself and following their passion. According to her, being able to enjoy what one does is one of the most rewarding things about being able to work at a dream job. Last but not least, she mentions that deciding to be a nurse means that one cares about taking care of others. Therefore, she encourages all nurses, in whichever capacity to always ensure that they provide the best quality of care possible.
Conclusion
Some of the main competencies according to the AACN education essentials include being able to contribute to aspects of quality assurance when it comes to the nursing practice and being able to utilize all the leadership skills that are essential in being in charge of a group of people (Burns, 2014). These are all things that are present in the life and work of the interviewee. One thing that I have learned from the interview is the importance of advanced education in the nursing career of an individual.
