Answer

Personal Statement

As I sat pensively on the inter-state bus watching the rain drops collect on the bus window, I reflected back on the past years of my life and how every moment had culminated to this final one. I had what most would call a ‘normal’ childhood, growing up in a middle class neighborhood, having average friends and even engaging in the occasional recreational activity. However, my life was a far cry from the ordinary. From a young age, my parents had instilled in me a culture of hard work and self-dependence, and they made sure I understood just how crucial these virtues were. Often times, when most children my age were busy at the theater watching movies or at the recreational center playing basketball, I would be at a neighbor’s yard collecting leaves or mowing the lawn so that I could earn an extra coin. Weeknights found me at a local restaurant called Morris’ Diner, doing the dishes and cleaning up the floor long after the final customer had gone. I struggled to balance my school work with my many jobs, often writing up assignments while issuing food orders or listening to audio versions of text books while scrubbing the pots and pans.

Though at times it was very hard, all the pieces of the puzzle fell together one summer in junior high school when I did what at the time seemed impossible. The school had advertised for a summer mentorship camp and an installment of the payment was required at registration with interested parties being required to pay the amount within one day. Due to the short notice, most people could not afford to make the payment. Because I had been saving up all my earnings from previous years, I was not only able to pay the installment but also the full amount needed. By the time I sat on the bus, waiting to head off to the mentorship camp, the significance of self-initiative as a problem-solving strategy was permanently ingrained in me. By seeking to apply for a position as a sociology student at your school, I am motivated by the need to continue using the principle of self-initiative in order to achieve career success, to improve my life’s circumstances, and to contribute to problem-solving in society.
