Palestine is a land area that includes the present-day territories of Israel and Jordan. Between 1517 and 1917, most of Palestine was being ruled by the Ottoman Empire. People who live in Palestine are known as Palestinians. Since Palestine includes the modern-day Jordan and Israel, sometimes both the Arab and Jewish residents who live here are known as Palestinians.

The Myth of the Arab Palestine was created only after the re-inhabitation, by Jews, of their historic homeland in Samaria and Judea (Brettler, 1998). Jews, not Palestinians, come from Judea. No land has ever been under the rule of Palestinians (Plascov, 1981). Palestinians are Arabs, who are indistinguishable from all the other Arabs in the entire Middle East. The majority of Arabs in Israel and in the greater Palestine share the same language, culture and are Muslims. Jews practice a religion known as Judaism. Judaism is the oldest yet the smallest of the four great monotheistic religions in the world. It has about 12 million followers across the world.
On the day the state of Israel was formed, on May 14, 1948, the nation was invaded by forces from Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, and Iraq. Immediately after this invasion, the most challenging task for the new provisional government was to disband various military groups existing in the country, some of them consisting of dissident forces, and forming a unified, professional military unit. At the height of the 1948 war, the IDF was finally formed, and its numbers swelled to about 100,000.
The newly independent Jewish state mobilized its force in order to counter the Arab invasion. The IDF consisted of nearly all able-bodied men, many women, and foreign volunteers, most of the World War II veterans. Soon Israel had set up a navy, an air force, and a tank battalion. Weapons and ammunition were bought from abroad, while three B-17 bombers were acquired from the United States black market. They were used to bomb Cairo in July 1948.
The war was fought in three fronts, and Israel established supremacy in all of them. Victories in all the three fronts came in rapid succession, followed by negotiations for separate armistice agreements by the Arab state: Egypt was the first to sign the armistice in February 1949 followed by Lebanon and Transjordan in March and April respectively. Syria signed in July while Iraq simply chose to withdraw its forces without any agreement being made. The war cost Israel 6,000 lives. it also resulted in the expansion of Israel’s territories beyond the partition plan that had been created by the United Nations.
The majority of Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan are located Tripoli, Sidon, Tyre and Lebanon’s capital Beirut. Before the modern-day Jordan state was formed, the territory was known as Trans-Jordan, meaning ‘across River Jordan’. The British, in 1923, had divided the “Palestine” part of the Ottoman Empire into two distinct administrative districts. The Jews were allocated the region to the west of Jordan River. In effect, what the British had done was to ‘chop off’ about 75% of what had originally been proposed as the Jewish homeland in order to create an Arab Palestinian nation known as Trans Jordan. After the 1948 war, this region was renamed Jordan.
The United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) was formed in 1948 in order to solve the refugee problem in the Middle East region. It has undergone renewal and expansion for more than 60 years through support from the UN, the US, and Israel. It has played an important role in building decent housing units for Palestine refugees. The refugee camps are often considered by Palestinians as a symbol of their struggle. UNRWA-run schools have been effective sources of education for Palestinian children. For historic reasons, these schools follow the Egyptian curriculum in areas around the Gaza Strip and the Jordan curriculum in West Bank.
