Title: Role Model


My role model is Steve Jobs. I chose this long-serving chief executive officer of Apple Inc. because of his leadership principles and vision. Moreover, I find Jobs’ perspectives on business, technology, and leadership particularly interesting. I find his leadership philosophy relevant in my endeavors towards coming up with an individual plan for employing individual accountability and leadership in college as well as in my career.

This paper explores Steve Job as a role model with an aim of establishing and identifying details that influence me to choose him. The paper contains scholarly research on how to choose role models and how Steve Jobs fits into the criteria offered by scholars as a role model. The research carried out in this paper also provides many insights into the role of this mentor in inspiring me come up with an individual plan for employing leadership and individual accountability in college and in my career.

Why Steve Jobs is my role model

A role model is a person who serves as a model for another person to emulate in a particular social or behavioral role. Role models are people who are imitated, emulated, and looked to by others for guidance. Some role models are good and they inspire others into greatness, while other role models are bad influences. The characteristics of a typical positive role model include positive choice-making, the ability to think out aloud, ability to accept mistakes, respect for others, well-roundedness, and demonstration of self-confidence.

Steve Jobs is highly respected for choice-making abilities, well-roundedness, and self-confidence. He not only co-founded Apple Inc, a $30 billion company, he was its highly successful top executive for decades (HGIC, 2010). He focused on handling less than 30 major products, at a time when tradition in the semiconductor industry was to invest in thousands of products. As he puts, he is as proud of the many things that Apple has not done as the things the company has done.

Steve Jobs’ main source of self-confidence is his emotional energy. Emotional energy is about yields passion to do what one loves to do. In Jobs’ own admission, without passion, it is impossible to keep fighting back in the face of difficulties and obstacles. People with a lot of emotional energy always find a way of getting things done even when there are many challenges along the way.

I am always fascinated by role models who know how to identify talent when they see one, mainly because I believe I am talented and I want someone to find me out some day. However, as Steve Jobs points out, talent alone is not enough. This assertion greatly inspires me into thinking of talent not as an end in itself but as a means to an end. Talent is merely a tool that has to be applied in a particular context. It takes a great deal of focus, self-confidence, emotional energy, and vision to push through the idea to a successful end.

Scholarly research on how to choose role models

In role modeling, an observer only identifies with the role model; the identification theory states that the observer does not have to interact with him (Scott, 1988). In this case, identification entails the desire of the individual observer to enhanced all the perceived similarities to another person, to assimilate aspects of the attitudes, values, and behaviors of the role model, and ultimately to occupy the model’s life situation. An individual makes another a role model through a conscious cognitive process through which the desired attributes are selectively viewed and assimilated.

Just like the identification theory, social learning theory proposes that individuals create a visual or verbal image of how a model undertakes particular tasks (Van Auken, 2006). The individuals then generalize attributes from this image for application in different situations. In all our hearts, we would like a role model to exist out there. However, although we often succeed in finding a variety of people for helping us in this struggle, and even adopting some of them as our role models, these people are always different from the models we make of them (Tan, 1995).

On the basis of social learning and identification theories, role models may be defined as cognitive constructs that individuals create on the basis of the values and attitudes, achievements, outcomes, and interpersonal skills of one or several models with whom the individual endeavors to enhance similarity on the basis of his ideas, needs, and goals (Krueger, 1993). This means that the nature of role models tends to vary from actual people to mythical or fictional figures. They also vary from a positive lesson of doing things to a negative lesson of how not to (Krueger, 1993).

Individual plan leadership and individual accountability in college career and how Steve Jobs fits in

I intend to be an entrepreneur in the semiconductor industry one day. I am inspired by the humble beginnings of Apple Inc. and the long journey that Steve Jobs has partaken at the helm of this electronics company. Back to my plan, I intend to be a leader who inspires others, identifies talents, and makes people believe in the brand that will form the core of my entrepreneurial adventures. Steve Jobs is a really adventurous character, who does not see limits to the heights of success as long as focus and emotional energy are the key driving forces.

Just like Steve Jobs, I have many options to choose from in terms of career. Although I am yet to come up with a great idea that can mark the start of a great entrepreneurial venture in the electronics industry, I have a gut feeling that I will soon stumble on it. I plan to pursue an electronics engineering course and begin looking for great entrepreneurial ideas right from the first day in the lecture room. The moment I come across this idea, I will just look for sources of finance and discontinue education to pursue entrepreneurship. I am convinced that I just like Steve Jobs, I do not have to complete studies to succeed in life; all I need is a great idea and vision. That is what individual accountability means to me, both in college and in career.


In summary, I choose Steve Jobs as my role model because I find his perspectives on business, technology, and leadership very interesting, particularly his leadership principles and vision. Moreover, he possesses the attributes of a great role model, including positive choice-making, ability to accept mistakes, vision, well-roundedness, and demonstration of self-confidence.
