The Future Nursing Core Competencies: Communications

Introduction

Professional nursing requires effective communication and interpersonal skills in daily healthcare operations. Both verbal and non-verbal communications are equally important in the sense that they provide a complementary framework for effective communication. The main factors affecting nursing communication include culture, gender and social structures (Hood, 2014). Meanwhile, in nursing, the benefits of communication should be viewed based on two roles: effective healthcare as well as leadership and management.

Effective Healthcare

All healthcare processes in nursing are heavily reliant on communication of instructions to ensure proper diagnosis, treatment. Communication between nurses and patients should to be comforting, reassuring and able to obtain important information from the latter for use during diagnosis. However, gap in communication tend to occur due to limitations of culture, language, age and religion (Boykins, 2014). Nurses encounter patients from all walks of life and are expected to ensure that they receive appropriate healthcare. Therefore, they are required to be creative and highly observant of factors affecting message delivery. By strengthening both their verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, they are able to understand patients’ explanations and deliver messages to them effectively.

Moreover, communication within various nursing units leads to strong teamwork and organization of records as well as nurse operations in different functions. Each nursing unit is charged with specific responsibilities and is basically one of the crucial building blocks of the health system. However, at one time or the other, each nurse must get involved in the tasks of organizing patient records and ensuring a good flow of patients between doctors, appointments, referrals, admissions and medications. These roles goes beyond the internal organization of a hospital by affecting the inter-relational and organizational levels among hospitals in the shared goal of delivery quality care. For example, keeping record safety serves the best interest of healthcare improvement efforts for all healthcare providers.

Leadership and Management

Communication provides a tool for building cordial relations between management nursing staff thereby providing an environment that facilitates the smooth allocation of tasks, the passing of instructions and overall supervision of the unit. This horizontal communication must be open and two-way to ensure that instructions are passed down to the staff and feedback and ideas are passed up to the management. For it to be effective, communication between these parties should exude respect, equal participation and listening skills.

Meanwhile, management is responsible for creating suitable and productive working situations for the nurses in a bid to promote efficiency and top performance. Communication and interaction techniques that are engaging and more practical than they are verbal will inspire and motivate the nursing professionals to provide the best services in their line of duty (Hood, 2014).

In the ongoing move towards a reformed healthcare system, management must employ interactive methods of obtaining ground information from nurses themselves in terms of individual healthcare workers’ strengths and weaknesses. In addition, they must actively push the nurses into creating their own suitable conditions and exercising their creativity and experience. This will steadily build a cohesive health care system that is free from insufficiency, corruption and poor services.

Conclusion

As demonstrated by this analysis, communication is a critical core competency in nursing. Thus, more resources must be committed into nurse training to ensure that professionals who are produce turn out to be excellent communicators. In this regard, ethical values and communication skills should be incorporated into nurse training programs without neglecting actual aspects of medical training. Similarly, nurse leaders and healthcare management teams should take the lead in fostering effective communication to strengthen the nursing workforce and, by extension, the operations of the entire healthcare system.
